Last Sunday, July 2nd, the Banco Ducal and the Treasury Ministry announced the new face of the Marienbourgish Thalers banknotes. The second series of banknotes was designed exclusively by His Serene Highness Duke Arthur V, and features animals typical of the Duchy on the observe side and typical plants on the reverse side. This series, highly inspired by Barbara Bérnat's Hungarian banknote redesign project, replaced the first banknote series, also designed by the Duke, introduced on 7 May this year. The justification, according to the President of Banco Ducal, was, in addition to aesthetics, to create more symbols that represent the country in order to strengthen the national identity.

The project with the new notes was proposed by the Duke directly to the Bank, which obtained permission from the Treasury to proceed with the plan. The Duke was then commissioned to design the banknotes. With the entry into circulation of the new series, the old one was made obsolete and had its serial numbers cancelled.
