In session, the expansion of the duchy lost its place to vote on the extension of a political term.
The Ducal Diet session held on the last 10th of June 2023 surprised the small population of Marienbourg. With the expansion of the duchy declared as the main agenda through the acquisition of new lands in the Brazilian city of Poços de Caldas, which surrounds Marienbourg, the parliamentarians ended up evading to an issue that worries them much more: the end of their mandates. With the next elections scheduled for less than a month (June 9th), Fernando Toledo, from the Popular Party, spoke about how it is irrelevant now to deal with the country's territorial expansion if, on the occasion of the elections, the government changes hands. "It would be a waste of time, effort, activity, patience..." said the parliamentarian, who completely changed the focus of the political debate. Proceeding with the permission of Lord President Jonathan Scherer, Fernando even suggested that the terms of elected MPs be extended to one year, such as the terms of the one-third of MPs who are appointed by the Duke.
The opposition of the Democratic Union did not object to the proposal of its political rival, which was applauded by the Popular Party. In view of the silence of the opposition, however, the vote was not carried out because, as it was a proposal for a constitutional amendment, it required the approval of at least two thirds of the members of the Diet, in this case, the unanimous Popular Party vote in favor and that of one more politician, from the Democratic Union. Given this scenario, it is expected that the debate on the expansion of the duchy will be postponed until there is a vote on the extension of terms. The Council of State and the Ducal House did not comment on the session in question and the change in the central topic of debate, but His Serene Highness the Duke is expected to speak after the vote that should take place in the coming weeks before the turn of the month.
